In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play)

by Sarah Ruhl

Off come the corsets. Up go the petticoats.
A comedy about marriage and intimacy of electric proportions.

Set in the 1880s, just after the advent of electricity, In the Next Room takes place in the adjoining parlor and consulting room of an upstanding physician, Dr. Givings, who specializes in treating hysteria in women.

A new patient, Mrs. Daldry, exhibits all the disturbing symptoms of the condition. Sensitive to light and sound, and prone to headaches and weeping, she is ushered into Dr. Givings’parlor by her concerned husband who is relieved to hear a brisk diagnosis and assurances that after a few sessions of therapy his wife will be restored to full health.

While Mr. Daldry makes formal conversation with Dr. Givingss bubbly, eccentric wife, Mrs. Daldry submits to the sober ministrations of the good doctor in the room next door. When Elizabeth, a grieving wet nurse, is brought in to care for the Givings baby, the Givings are forced to confront the realities of their marriage, their love for one another, and the nature of intimacy– all without the help of an electrical current.

Provocative, moving, and utterly charming, Sarah Ruhl’s In the Next Room is a comedy about passion, true love, and orgasms.
